Angels' Shohei Ohtani To Make 1st Start As Pitcher On Sunday

With the Los Angeles Angels set to take on the division-rival Oakland Athletics on Opening Day, Japanese sensation Shohei Ohtani is expected to make his regular season Major League Baseball debut.

Graveman is starting the A's opener for the second year in a row while Garrett Richards is starting for the Angels.

Ohtani's debut will come in the finale of the Angels' season-opening four-game series in Oakland. With the Angels now planning to employ a six-man rotation, Ohtani could make his home debut the following week against the same A's team. "We'll adjust as we have to as we move through the season".

The Angels' lineup: Zack Cozart, second base; Mike Trout, center field; Justin Upton, left field; Albert Pujols, first base; Kole Calhoun, right field; Andrelton Simmons, shortstop; Luis Valbuena, third base; Ohtani; and Martin Maldonado (catcher). His performance at the plate wasn't anything to marvel over, either, as he went 4-for-32 with 10 strikeouts.

Scioscia called Ohtani's last outing, in which he struggled en route to issuing 5 walks, a "great outing".

Scioscia mentioned he hopes to get his pitcher to at least 90 pitches Sunday after he threw 85 in an intrasquad game Saturday against minor league hitters. "When it's in sync, it [his fastball] comes out hot".

"Of course, in a ideal world, I would've like to have faced more major league hitters, but it's more than that", Ohtani said Saturday through his interpreter. "It's also about me making adjustments with the mound and the ball and all that. I just had to check with my own stuff, mechanics [and] timing".
