Antoine Fuqua Back In 'Scarface' Talks
After bowing out to direct the sequel to "The Equalizer", director Antoine Fuqua looks to have come back into the fray to direct Universal's new re-imagining of "Scarface". Rather than setting the story in Miami, the new Scarface will take place in Los Angeles following a Mexican immigrant rather than a Cuban. Ayer and Universal ended up parting ways after the studio read his Scarface script, which was reportedly unnecessarily dark and gruesome - and that's saying a lot considering how violent the two other Scarface films have been.
In an earlier press release that Universal revealed the film a year ago, it was said the shooting script was written by Joel and Ethan Coen, who've known their way around crime dramas in the past, having previously penned and helmed Fargo and No Country for Old Men.
Diego Luna's name has been circulating as the lead, but these new negotiations have pushed back production, which could lead to scheduling conflicts for the actor.

The film has had quite a rocky path to production so far. Ayer was even going to direct at one point, though he eventually left the project due to "scheduling conflicts", a catch-all term that provides cover for an unlimited number of industry issues. Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber, Dylan Clark will produce with Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 Scarface from director Brian De Palma returning to produce as well. Paul Muni starred in the earlier version. I guess that's what a Flatliners remake will do to you.
While some may be aghast that any would attempt to replace Pacino's Tony Montana, many have forgotten that his Scarface is itself a remake of an equally controversial (for its time) gangster picture from 1932. I took Denzel into that world as a cop in Training Day, and that was a world that I know probably way too much about. I saw it with guys I grew up with.
Executive vice president of production Jon Mone and vice president of production Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for Universal.
