NOAA in partnership with NASA will launch the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-S (GOES-S) later to be named as GOES-West.

GOES-S is the second spacecraft in NOAA's GOES-R series of geostationary satellites created to replace older versions, developed in the mid-1980s, that are now in orbit.

In addition to tracking severe weather from storm clouds, NOAA officials said GOES' ABI can help meteorologists track tornadoes, ice coverage over rivers, flooding events, forest fires, smoke and volcanic ash.

"The advanced capabilities of this new satellite will provide vital data to improve forecasts for all weather hazards across the West and downstream across the remainder of the continental USA", said retired Navy Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet, Ph.D., USN Ret., Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and Acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere.

NOAA funds, manages and plans to operate the GOES-R Series satellites. "We at United Launch Alliance are proud that either our current or one of our heritage vehicles has launched every GOES satellite that has ever launched".

The satellite includes six instruments of which, two are created to study the earths weather while the other four are meant to keep an eye on the weather in space and how it impacts the Earth.

Anushka Sharma released seventh screamer of her horror venture 'Pari'
With just a day left for the release, the makers or the lead actors did not indulge in any kind of promotions for the film. Anushka's character seems to be possessed by the evil power using her as a vessel, as suggested by the film's poster.

If all goes well, the satellite will be released into a preliminary elliptical orbit three-and-a-half hours after launch.

At the news conference and at another one held earlier on February 27, NOAA and NASA researchers shared stories of how GOES-East's remarkably clear views have aided in search-and-rescue operations as well as in forecasting. During wildfire season in California, people using GOES data were able to warn local authorities about fires before they'd even been spotted on the ground. "It just takes them much more rapidly and in many different colors and with much better resolution than the past imagers".

GOES-S will complement other geostationary satellites, like GOES-East, as well as polar-orbiting satellites like JPSS-1, which launched last November. "The geostationary satellite, the GOES series, is a crucial component of today's global observing system".

Two more are scheduled for launch in the coming years: GOES-T in 2020 and GOES-U 2024.

"These satellites are giving us the ability to look at storms as often as every 30 seconds, allowing forecasters to see storms as they are developing instead of as they have already taken place", said Tim Walsh, acting GOES-R system program director at NOAA.
