Darren Lehmann has announced his decision to step down as the coach of the Australian cricket team following the ball tampering scandal.
David Warner also addressed the media briefly and said "you will hear from me in a few days" regarding the scandal that Cricket Australia found he had masterminded.
The coach also said the team would need to improve their behaviour on and off the pitch in order to win back fan respect after Bancroft was caught tampering with the ball in the 322-run third test defeat by South Africa at Newlands.
"I've been privileged andhonoured to represent my country". Bancroft who I don't know was led astray but deserved punishing but again too harshly (in my opinion). It is devastating to me. I don't blame anyone.
Lehmann has been Australia head coach since the 2013 Ashes, coincidentally taking over from Mickey Arthur after a controversy - the homework gate - had sent the latter packing. "It's on my watch and I take responsibility for what happened", he told the media on his arrival in Sydney from South Africa.
"So I think you can forget about either of them captaining Australia", he said.
"I take full responsibility, I made a serious error of judgement and I understand the consequences".
"They have made a grave mistake but they are not bad people". I will do my best to contribute to the community. "I'm absolutely gutted. I hope in time I can earn back respect and forgiveness".
"I hope the rebounds from this and I hope the Australian public find it in their hearts to forgive these young men and get behind the 11 who are going to take the field tomorrow".
