Those three were the only players involved in the ball tampering plot in the third test against South Africa on Saturday, Sutherland insisted, after receiving parts of a report from CA's integrity officer Iain Roy.

Steve Smith and David Warner, along with Cameron Bancroft, have been stood down by Cricket Australia in the wake of the ball tampering scandal.

"We will have more to say about this review in the coming days, but it will be conducted by an expert panel who will report to the Cricket Australia Board". James Sutherland, the CEO of Cricket Australia, said penalties were likely to be "significant".

After the CA investigation, all three players were found guilty of breaching article 2.3.5 of Cricket Australia's Code of Conduct and will fly home from South Africa on Thursday.

David Warner also stood down from his role as vice-captain, while questions remain over coach Darren Lehmann although Smith said the former Australian global was not involved in the conspiracy. Coach Darren Lehmann, a target for scrutiny for the Australian media, played no role in the cheating, Sutherland said, and would continue as coach.

The Australians tampered with the ball on the third day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa and were caught red-handed.

The sanctions for the trio, involved in the ball-tampering saga, will be decided in the next 24 hours, Sutherland said.

"It is up to Cricket Australia to make a final decision on whether the players have brought disrepute to the game of cricket".

Tim Paine, appointed as the new Australia captain in place of Smith, faces a huge task in picking up his shattered side, not least after the 322-run drubbing they received in Cape Town at the hands of Rabada and veteran paceman Morne Morkel.

"It's about the integrity and reputation of Australian cricket and Australian sport", Sutherland said.

"Winning is important, but not at the expense of the game".

Warner, a divisive figure in world cricket, was previously fined 75 percent of his match fee after an altercation with Quinton de Kock earlier in the series, while South Africa bowler Kagiso Rabada was banned for two games for bumping into Smith, although the suspension was later lifted.

"We recognise this issue goes beyond the technical nature of offences and various codes of conduct".

The Australians are also hardly the first worldwide team to get caught. "This is not a good day for Australian cricket".

Sanctions are expected to be announced within the next 24 hours.

Smith and Bancroft had admitted to ball tampering in the post-match press conference with the Australian skipper also adding that the leadership knew about the move.

CCTV footage showed Warner being restrained by team-mates as he appeared to lose his temper during a confrontation on a staircase as the players walked to their dressing rooms.
