It easily topped the opening weekend of fantasy-adventure movie A Wrinkle in Time, which took $US33.5 million ($43m) at 3,980 sites.

According to The Grapevine Black Panther reached the $1 billion dollar milestone at the global box offices this weekend, raking in $562 million in the U.S alone, and a whopping $41 million during the weekend! Black Panther also opened in China this weekend, earning $66.5 million.

High box-office returns were expected, especially with this being the first film directed by a woman of colour boasting a budget of over US$100 million (RM390 million).

Black Panther and A Wrinkle in Time are both sending shockwaves throughout the entertainment industry.

A Wrinkle in Time sees Ava DuVernay directing a cast that includes Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galifianakis, Levi Miller, Andre Holland and Deric McCabe.

Fox's second weekend of Jennifer Lawrence's spy thriller Red Sparrow followed in fourth with US$8.2 million at 3,064 sites with a 52 per cent decline.

Down one place, "Game Night" takes #5 with $7.9 million (cume now $45.0 million). The movie was not universally adored by critics, while moviegoers also did not have the best things to say; it earned a B CinemaScore, which may hurt second-weekend results due to a relatively worse word-of-mouth response (Black Panther netted an A+ CinemaScore).
