Two separate FIRs were filed against Supriyo after the BJP MLA got into a scuffle with cops as he attempted to enter troubled areas in Asansol - a town which has seen violence following Ram Navami processions in Raniganj earlier in the week.

In response, Supriyo lodged a counter FIR against IPS officer Rupesh Kumar at the Asansol South police station, alleging Kumar of assaulting him.

"As the local MP, it is my responsibility to stand by the people who are in trouble, but the police, without any reason, stopped me from meeting them", said Supriyo. Police was saying that I would not be allowed to go as Section 144 is imposed in the area.

Later in the day, Home Minister Rajnath Singh called Supriyo to enquire about the cuurent situation prevailing in the place.

The internet services were also suspended following the clashes between two groups on Sunday and Monday over a Ram Navami rally at Raniganj. According to report published by the national daily, Indian Express, he was picked by the mob and his body was recovered late on Wednesday night and identified on Thursday. Samastipur superintendent of police Dipak Ranjan said the arrests were made on the basis of video footage during the skirmishes. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has however asserted that such behavior was unacceptable in her state and that her government would strongly deal with each miscreant.

Hours after his 16-year-old son was found dead, becoming the fourth victim of violence triggered by Ram Navami processions across the state since Sunday, Maulana Imdadul Rashidi, Imam of a mosque in Asansol, on Thursday presided over a congregation where he appealed for peace.

"There have been no fresh incidents of violence, although Section 144 is still imposed in the area", a district police officer said, adding, the situation was still tense.

Senior IPS officers Jawed Shamim, Siddhinath Gupta and Vineet Goyal have been deputed on special duty to bring the situation under control.
