Another bank fraud has broken with Canara Bank moving the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with a complaint of fraudulent transactions worth Rs 515.15 crores against Kolkata-based R P Infosystem and its directors.
As per report, an FIR has been registered against company's directors Shivaji Panja, Kaustuv Ray, Vinay Bafna, vice-president (Finance) Debnath Pal, and unknown bank officials. "It is learnt that in the month of December 2013, IDBI Bank lodged a complaint regarding the fraud committed on their bank alone to the CBI and the CBI investigated only their exposure of IDBI Bank", the latest complaint from Canara Bank said. It is alleged that loans were taken on the basis of false and fabricated documents. This is the first bank fraud case filed in the city after the PNB scam broke out.
These loans have become NPA, it said, The banks alleged that company manipulated financial statements and did not route sale proceeds through the loan account. The consortium includes the Punjab National Bank, the State Bank of India, the Union Bank of India, Allahabad Bank, the Oriental Bank of Commerce, Federal Bank, the Central Bank of India, the State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur and the State Bank of Patiala.

Based on the complaint, the CBI has drawn up an FIR against Panja, Roy and others for cheating, forgery and Section 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The FIR alleges that Letters of Credit opened by consortium members on the applications of the firm started devolving from 2012 due to non-maintenance of funds. He was detained at Calcutta airport while returning from Dhaka with the chief minister. The leader bank had already filed a case with the CBI in May 2015.
The CBI had booked the company, which was involved in manufacturing and trading of computers in the name "Chirag" brand, in June 2015 following an IDBI Bank's complaint.
