The unexpected Winter Wonderland was chalked up to a Siberian weather system dubbed "the Beast from the East" which has plunged much of the continent into risky, sub-zero temperatures. (EPA/Angelo Carconi) The Trevi fountain is covered in snow during a heavy snowfall in Rome.
The temperature dropped to 17.5 degrees Fahrenheit below zero Sunday night into early Monday at Zugspitze Mountain in southern Germany.
Meanwhile in Vatican City's St. Peter's Square, clergy were caught throwing a few snowballs.
Authorities in Rome opened several train stations to the city's homeless population to provide temporary emergency shelter from the cold, a move which Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni praised online.
While the Arctic is seeing record high temperatures, the cold snap across Europe has brought snow even to the balmy Mediterranean islands of Corsica and Capri. It wasn't much (only 1.5 inches) and caused its fair share of headaches with traffic and closed schools, businesses, and tourist attractions.
Due to the inclement weather, officials canceled school and called in the army to help clear the snowfall.
Just when you thought Rome couldn't get any more attractive, the city made a decision to become a magical winter wonderland overnight.
