Billy Graham becomes first religious leader to lie in honor inside US Capitol Rotunda

President Donald Trump touches the casket of Rev. Billy Graham, who died last week at age 99, during a ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda where he will lie in honor as a tribute.

The North Carolina minister, called "America's pastor" by some, is lying in honor Wednesday and Thursday in Washington, where he counseled presidents and others over more than 60 years.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said, "The man we recognize today may well have shared the Gospel with more people, face-to-face, than anyone else in history".

Franklin Graham said many have called his father the "Pastor to Presidents" since the evangelist has known every United States president since President Truman and has maintained friendships with many of them.

Criticism of honoring Graham at the Capitol has been somewhat muted, with the Freedom From Religion Foundation issuing a statement calling the plan to have his body lie in honor inappropriate and citing, among other things, his comments on the Nixon tapes disparaging Jewish people, for which he apologized after they became public in March 2002.

Graham will lie in honor until Thursday. Back in Charlotte, at Graham's boyhood home, another president arrived Tuesday to pay his respects.

"Billy Graham carried his message around the world, but his heart, like Franklin will tell you, was always in America", Trump said.

The Rotunda entrances were draped with black fabric, and Graham's casket rested on a black-draped catafalque beneath the soaring ceiling and its painting, the "Apotheosis of Washington".

"Billy Graham lifted up our nation, not because he occupied the spotlight so masterfully - but because he knew he wasn't the one who belonged in it", McConnell added.

Billy Graham will be the 32nd person and fourth private citizen to receive the distinction, and joins a list of legendary leaders including Abraham Lincoln, John F Kennedy and Rosa Parks.

Graham will be buried Friday in a private family service in Charlotte, which Trump is scheduled to attend.

Former President Bill Clinton recalled seeing one of Graham's crusades as a child, a profound experience that became more incredible over his life.

His body is set to arrive at Dulles International Airport at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Franklin Graham greeted him at the sidewalk.

The former president recounted that the year before Little Rock Central High School had been integrated.

Clinton and Bush said they came early because they could not make it to Graham's funeral on Friday.

Before then, entry to the Capitol is restricted to Members of Congress and spouses, invited dignitaries, USCP credentialed guests and credentialed media from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The mourners Tuesday are expected to include former U.S. President Bill Clinton at the complex that includes Graham's family home, his library and the headquarters of his evangelical association.
