BJP chief Amit Shah's slip of tongue embarrasses BS Yeddyurappa

BJP president Amit Shah is now on a two-day tour of various religious mutts across the south and central parts of Karnataka to mobilise support for the upcoming polls.

While many expect the Narendra Modi-magic to sweep Karnataka like it has been doing in a lot of states, the party may have just started the assault on the wrong foot.

"If there was a competition in corruption, the Yeddyurappa government would get the No. 1 award", Shah said, referring to former Karnataka chief minister and state BJP President BS Yeddyurappa.

Shah was addressing the press after the Election Commission announced the dates for the Karnataka elections.

On Tuesday, the Election Commission announced the Karnataka Assembly Election dates, with polling take place on May 12 and counting on May 15. BJP MP Pralhad Joshi immediately corrected Shah by saying into his ear, "Siddaramaiah government".

For the BJP's massive anti-corruption plank in Karnataka, however, the irony lies in finding it hard to escape the "corrupt" tag as far as Yeddyurappa, the party's big hope in the state, is concerned.

Yeddyurappa was sitting on Shah's right when he made the statement.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi said the BJP president had gifted his party a "top secret campaign video". "@BSYBJP is the most corrupt!" she tweeted.

Shah said: "Recently a retired Supreme Court judge said if there was ever a competition of the most corrupt government then the Yeddyurappa government is number one..." which, for obvious reasons, shocked Yeddyurappa and the BJP.

Shah said it was not a programme towards the welfare of the Veerashaiva and Lingayat community but a "conspiracy" to stop Yeddyurappa, considered a Lingayat strongman, from becoming the chief minister.

The BJP has been trying hard to wrest Karnataka from the Congress.

It's not the first time Shah said Yeddyurappa instead of Siddaramaiah. Mr Yeddyurappa - who was chief minister of the first BJP government in Karnataka from 2008 - was forced to step down in August 2011 amid corruption allegations by Karnataka's ombudsman or Lokayukta, Santosh Hegde.

"Wherever there is a Congress-ruled government, the number of farmer suicides increases, and in whichever state ruled by the BJP, the number of farmer suicides decreases", claimed BJP president.
