Trump Dumps McMaster, Hires Bolton as National Security Advisor
Candidate Trump appeared on "Meet the Press" in the summer of 2015 just weeks after announcing his run for president.
A national defense analyst says President Trump's decision to name former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton as his national security advisor sends the right message to America's antagonists. One would expect Bolton to use those aspects of his new position to empower rather than constrain some of Trump's more strident instincts.
John Bolton was a fierce supporter of the 2003 war in Iraq, and comes to the White House as an unreconstructed proponent of the invasion. He is, for example, a hawk on Russian Federation - but so is virtually every other foreign-policy expert, which makes Trump's affection for Vladimir Putin all the more conspicuous.
"For a seemingly superpower country, it is shameful that its national security official would be receiving a salary from a terrorist sect", IRNA quoted Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, as saying.
What counted, said the spokesman, who did not want his name used, is not what Bolton thinks "but how the entire US government and President Trump will try to resolve this issue" of North Korea's nuclear program.
Bolton is assuming the post of Trump's national security adviser at a time when USA officials are attempting to persuade the Taliban to engage with the recent peace overtures by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. Bolton, they claim, is a unsafe warmonger unfit for the office. But Bolton is signaling restraint until Trump makes a decision. More ominous is the onset of the confrontational John Bolton to take over from Mr. McMaster.
Yet officials said the president still has genuine respect for McMaster. In January, Bolton described the deal as a "strategic mistake".
A strong supporter of the Iraq war and an advocate for aggressive use of American power, Bolton was unable to win Senate confirmation after his nomination to the United Nations post alienated many Democrats and even some Republicans.
On top of all that, Bolton chairs the Gatestone Institute, which like that Europe is littered with neighborhoods non-Muslims can't enter.

Bolton's executive wrath is said to be directed primarily at those who were brought in during the Obama administration.

Veteran Israeli diplomat Ambassador Yoram Ettinger told WIN, "The appointment of Bolton serves as a thundering message to the world that the United States is serious about overhauling and upgrading its posture of deterrence which was severely eroded during Bush's second term and during eight years of the Obama presidency". As everyone now knows, Bolton was one of the chief cheerleaders and architects for the Iraq war.
Tillerson and McMaster both don't like the deal but counseled not pulling out of it because Iran is complying with its narrow strictures, and leaving would remove whatever leverage the United States has with its allies to pressure Iran outside the deal's confines. In an interview with The New York Times in 2002, Mr. Bolton was asked about the Bush administration's stance on North Korea.
During his talk last month, Bolton said that if the safety of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal was threatened, "you would have Iran on steroids right now".
Pompeo echoes Bolton. He wants to roll back "the disastrous deal" with Iran, and said previous year, on Fox News, that the only diplomatic option left with North Korea was "to end the regime". He said on Fox News "the only diplomatic solution left is to end the regime". Bolton has made it evident in his previous work that he is strongly and fervently in favor of striking North Korea and toppling the North Korean regime. He has advocated for pre-emptive military strikes against North Korea and military strikes on Iran.
Martin Luther King Jr. spoke of being a drum major for peace. It has already been changing a great deal and will continue to change upon John Bolton's accession.
