Victim of veterans home shooting fondly remembered by Dedham friend
Tragic details are emerging about the three women who lost their lives at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville on Friday.
Wong, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, then killed himself. Larry Kamer, a Pathway spokesman, told the San Francisco Chronicle the directors of the program, which treats veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars with mental trauma, are reviewing security protocols and added that the facility may never reopen.
"Whatever happened out there, he didn't say he was going to shoot anybody", Wong's brother, Tyrone Lampkin, told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
The shooter has been identified as 36-year-old Army infantryman Albert Wong.
But Cissy Sherr, who had been Wong's guardian for four years, expressed doubt over whether he had the condition. Wong previously held a license to openly carry a 9 mm handgun as a security guard, but this license was cancelled in October 2017.
Childs said that officers had searched the gunman's rented vehicle in the parking lot for bombs, but ultimately did not find any.
Lampkin says Wong would obsess about relatively minor conflicts, such as someone owing him money or not pulling their weight.
How to help victims of Yountville veterans home shooting " It's just hard to see that some of my fellow people in the industry that just put their heart and soul and passion into helping change a life can be struck down in the service of that", said Karen Graff, who didn't know any of the victims but was compelled to drop flowers at an onsite memorial.
Wong fired off at least 30 shots in the veterans home, authorities said. "It's surreal, crushing", said Maura Turner, Loeber's college roommate and close friend.
Much of her zeal for the cause was shaped and honed in the South Bay, where she grew up and where she later would return to help establish the Veterans Resource Center at San Jose State University. "Anybody can walk into this property with an AR-15 or some other weapons and go to our dining hall, kill 300 people in one meal. We've complained for years here, and the people at CalVet in Sacramento don't seem to be willing to do any of that".
