Video released Thursday from Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida shows a sheriff's deputy remaining outside as a gunman murdered 17 students and staff inside.

A Broward County sheriff's deputy, Scot Peterson, resigned in disgrace roughly a week after the shooting after an investigation found he waited outside the school and made no attempt to confront the gunman, though his lawyer disputed accusations that Peterson failed to follow protocol or acted cowardly.

Phil Keating reported the details on "Outnumbered Overtime" Thursday.

Peterson, DiRuzzo said, had the "presence of mind" to have school administrators go to the school's video room and review the closed-circuit cameras to locate the shooter and then obtain a description for law enforcement.

Several media organizations sued the BSO and Broward County Public Schools for the release of the video recordings from the exterior of the Parkland school.

But a detailed timeline released last week by the sheriff's office, based on radio dispatches and surveillance footage, showed Peterson said over police radio that the blasts were coming from "inside". "His (Peterson's) actions were enough to warrant an internal affairs investigation, as requested by Sheriff Scott Israel on February 21", the Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "After being suspended without pay, Peterson chose to resign and immediately retired rather than face possible termination".

Earlier this week a judge authorized the video's release. The footage above focuses mostly on Peterson.

Sheriff Israel castigated Peterson a little more than a week after the shooting, saying he should have "went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer".

In the letter, Peterson claims that he received an emergency "call of firecrackers", not gunfire, and responded by running hundreds of yards where he "heard gunshots but believed that those gunshots were originating from outside of any of the buildings on the school campus".
