Eggs embryos possibly damaged at California clinic
Hospital officials say about 700 patients are affected.
A San Francisco fertility clinic experienced a rare malfunction that could potentially affect patients' eggs and embryos on the same day that a clinic in Cleveland suffered a similar problem, ABC News reports.
A long-established San Francisco fertility clinic had a liquid nitrogen failure in a storage tank in which thousands of eggs and embryos are kept frozen for future use, jeopardizing the tissue that hundreds of women have deposited there in hope of having children.
An unrelated but similar incident was reported last week.
Herbert said the extent to which the chemical failure damaged the eggs and embryos remains unclear.
Officials say approximately 2,000 frozen eggs and embryos may have been damaged due to the storage tank malfunction at the OH hospital fertility clinic. They have not checked any of the embryos, he said.
Samples would need to be unthawed to determine whether they've been damaged.
"Our clients are absolutely devastated, as I'm sure countless families across OH are in the wake of this catastrophic failure by University Hospitals", lawyer Mark DiCello says in the news release.

The Pacific Fertility Center is located in San Francisco's North Beach region; in the past, it has said that its patients include families of employees at Facebook and other tech companies, many of which pay the costs of fertility treatments as part of their health coverage.
The lawsuit was being instituted on behalf of Amber and Elliot Ash, a husband and wife who had an embryo stored at the facility. Any lawsuits being filed will have no bearing on the independent review being conducted'.
After the Cleveland incident, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine released a statement saying that the cryogenic failure and "potential loss of eggs and embryos at University Hospitals Fertility Center in Cleveland is a tragedy". We do know that there is viable tissue from that tank. The increased temperature risks damage to the eggs and embryos.
"As soon as the issue was discovered, our most senior embryologists took immediate action to transfer those tissues from the affected equipment to a new piece of equipment".
In its statement, Pacific Fertility said an independent investigation is in progress and apologized for the incident.
"We are truly sorry this happened and for the anxiety that this will surely cause".
"This was a awful incident", Herbert told the Post, "but I was reassured that he did everything anybody could ever want to do".
