The "Sanctuary State" of California made national headlines again this week; appointing for the first time in its history an illegal immigrant to state office; escalating its all-out war with the Trump administration over federal guidelines regarding undocumented workers.
An attorney and immigrant rights activist is the first person living in the US illegally to be named to a statewide appointment in the nation's most populous state, California's Senate leader announced Wednesday.
Attorney and immigrant rights activist Lizbeth Mateo, 33, of Los Angeles, was selected by the Senate Rules Committee to serve as a student aid advisor on a committee aimed at increasing college access for low-income families in the state.
"While Donald Trump fixates on walls, California will continue to concentrate on opportunities", said Senate President Kevin de Leon.

Through a statement, Mateo thanked the opportunity and assured that "while undocumented students have become more visible in our state, they remain underrepresented in places where the decisions that affect them are being made". Democrats who run California government, including de Leon, vehemently oppose the wall and Trump's conservative stance on immigration.
On Wednesday, the Senate Rules Committee approved the appointment of Lizbeth Mateo to a committee that helps low-income and underserved students go to college.
But De Leon said Mateo embodies California values. But, in a 2016 Facebook post, when she graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law, Mateo seemed to wish she was back in Mexico: "E$3 verything is dedicated to Oaxaca, Mexico! to that land that I miss so much".
The president has repeatedly condemned California's allowance of sanctuary cities, writing on Twitter on Wednesday that "California's sanctuary policies are illegal and unconstitutional and put the safety and security of our entire nation at risk". But bridges are even better than walls.
