Campus carry bill dies in the WV House of Representatives

The House legislation would give a 5 percent raise to teachers, service personnel and State Police troopers, with additional raises for other state employees to be addressed in the coming days.

Together, teachers said they will stand united until a fix is made.

Senate Bill 942, better known as the Historic Triangle Bill, was passed by the Virginia State Senate on Wednesday. Almost half the schools in the state announced Friday's closures before 4 p.m.

But the Senate's Republican majority voted 20-14 against taking the bill to an immediate floor vote Thursday and instead sent it to the Finance Committee, which won't meet until Friday.

Sen. Craig Blair, R-Berkeley, who is head of the Senate Finance Committee, said the group will meet today but will be looking at the budget as a whole and would not be focusing exclusively on pay increases, PEIA or HB 4151.

The Senate goes back into session at 11 a.m. Thursday.

He said he was very concerned that 40 of West Virginia's 55 counties have excess school levies going before voters in May, and the pay raise bill could negatively affect their outcomes.
