Mnuchin: Tariffs won't apply to Mexico or Canada if NAFTA renegotiations are successful

"He's not afraid to get into a trade war, although that's not what we want".

The US administration mulls offering Mexico and Canada a 30-day exemption from its new steel and aluminium tariffs, officials told local media on Wednesday.

Mr. Trump said he would delay implementation of the tariff for metals from Canada and Mexico, pending their willingness to "make a deal " to his liking on a revised North American Free Trade Agreement.

The announcement is expected Thursday, according to the report. He discussed the tariffs by telephone on Friday with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of Australia and President Mauricio Macri of Argentina, the White House said. But if no deal is reached in negotiations among the three countries that began in August, "then we're going to terminate NAFTA and we'll start all over again or we'll just do it a different way", Trump added.

"The president can do exemptions and my expectation is there may be some other countries that he considers in the next two weeks", Mnuchin said in an interview with broadcaster CNBC.

He repeated the comment made by the government last week that Canada will take responsive measures if the US goes ahead with the tariffs.

He said, "As the President just announced, Canada is very significant partner that buys steel and sells steel".

Trump linked the exemptions for Canada and Mexico to progress on renegotiating Nafta to favour the United States.

The threat by Trump to implement the tariffs roiled financial markets last week and caused the head of the World Trade Organization to issue a warning on Monday, saying such measures could create risks sending the world into another recession.

But, he said, countries that don't like the sound of that should make him an offer.
