Cardinals reportedly near deal with free agent closer Greg Holland, pending a physical

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the St. Louis Cardinals are nearing a one-year deal worth $14 million with closer Greg Holland. If the Cardinals complete the deal, they will forfeit their second-highest draft pick in June, now No. 43, and $500,000 of global signing-bonus allocation for the 2018-19 signing period.

A three-time All-Star, Holland was a free agent after leading the National League with 41 saves previous year for Colorado.

News of the signing broke on Opening Day of the 2018 regular season. He was 3-6 with a 3.61 ERA in 61 games for the Rockies past year, striking out 70 and walking 26 in 571/3 innings.

The right-hander was named an All-Star for his dominant first half (1.62 ERA), but he struggled down the stretch with a 6.38 ERA in his last 26 appearances. Holland could possibly join the team in NY. Holland allowed a pair of runs during the NL wildcard game in which the Rockies lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 32-year-old tied for the National League lead in saves last season with 41.

The St. Louis Cardinals opened their season on Thursday with an away game against the New York Mets but fell 9-4 in that contest. Holland was the closer for the Kansas City Royals most of both the 2014 and 2015 seasons, when the American League team reached the World Series two consecutive seasons winning one title.

During those two seasons, in which he was an All-Star in both, Holland was able to convert 93 out of 98 save opportunities.

Over his career, he's got a 2.60 ERA and 186 saves.
