Ram Sethu will not be damaged for Sethusamudram project Centres tells SC
Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand told the bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra that the centre has filed the response (its affidavit) in pursuance of the earlier directions given by the Supreme Court and that the petition filed by Swamy can now be disposed off.
After a prolonged litigation, the Centre finally informed the Supreme Court today that it will not damage the mythological Ram Setu for its Sethusamudram Ship Channel project, in the "interest of the nation".
But Rajender Pachauri Committee, set up by the central government on 30 July 2008, said the alternate alignment for building Sethusamudram shipping channel while saving the Rama Sethu was "neither ecologically nor economically" feasible.
In a fresh affidavit filed by the centre in the Supreme Court, the former has said it will not remove Ram Setu, and that the government will explore alternative routes to build the shipping canal project.
"Considering the socio-economic disadvantages of alignment number 6, the government doesn't want to implement the said alignment", it said. In his PIL, Swamy had sought directions from the Supreme Court that the Ram Sethu should not be touched.

The Ram Sethu or Adam's Bridge is a continuous stretch of limestone shoals that runs from Pamban Island near Rameshwaram in South India to Mannar Island off the northern coast of Sri Lanka.
Under the Sethusamudram project, an 83 kilometre-long deep water channel was to be created, linking Mannar with Palk Strait, by extensive dredging and removal of the limestone shoals. The UPA-I government had initially filed an affidavit in Supreme Court saying there was no evidence to prove that Ram Setu was a place of worship.
In 1997, the government made a decision to go ahead with the project but only finalised it in 2005. The ASI affidavit had triggered an outrage among the Hindu right, something that the BJP relentlessly used to attack the then Congress-led ruling coalition and also disrupt parliamentary proceedings.
