Durham county council told residents to put bins away until the next collection
Now it says it will have to prioritise collecting rubbish from green bins and food waste, starting on Monday, to avoid "a public health risk".
This afternoon (Friday) the council updated residents, and said they may now resume bin collections on Saturday after the "treacherous conditions" forced them to cancel refuse collections for a third successive day.
The council will also be introducing a new wheelie bin for mixed recycling that provides more space over two weeks than the current recycling boxes collected weekly to help residents slim their bins.
"All collections for today, Friday 2nd March have been suspended".
"To achieve this, we have had to take the hard decision to suspend all recycling collections from March 5 to 9".
The spokesman added: "Crews will be exceptionally busy trying to catch up, so if you do not need a green bin collection, please do not present it until your next scheduled collection".

Your garden waste bin/sacks and plastic, paper and textile recycling bags will be collected on your next scheduled Green Week (w/c 12 March). Householders are asked to present their bin by 5.30am on Monday and leave it out until collected.
Households due to have their recycling collected next week will have any remaining black bins dealt with first. So, if your blue bin was missed, it will be collected at your next scheduled date.
Extra recycling waste must be put in white bin liners or other clear bags only as any in black bin bags will not be taken.
Blue bin collections planned for next week will be collected on normal collection day.
