The decorated former England international has been put in an induced coma in hospital

Wilkins played for Chelsea, Manchester United and AC Milan throughout his career.

The England legend, 61, was taken to St George's Hospital in London from his home in Cobham, Surray after falling down the stairs.

His doctors made a decision to put him in an induced coma as his family kept a bedside vigil as he fought for his life last night.

Wilkins' wife, Jackie, told British newspaper The Daily Mirror that he had a cardiac arrest after a fall and is in "an induced coma".

"He is not in a good state at all, I " m afraid. She added the situation is "very bad".

Rangers tweeted: "The thoughts of everyone at Rangers FC are with Hall of Fame midfielder Ray Wilkins and his family at this time".

In recent years, he has worked as a pundit - regularly appearing on talkSPORT radio and on Sky Sports News. "Keep fighting Ray, you have our love and support", said a statement on the Chelsea Twitter feed.

Wilkins, who has bravely battled poor health including ulcerative colitis over the last few years, was given the all clear after a double heart bypass operation last July.

"Butch" as his folks calls him, played for England for a decade, winning 84 caps and netting three times.

"His family have asked for privacy at this time, and we are tweeting this update with their agreement".

Wilkins had spells as manager of QPR, Fulham and the Jordan national team.
