The foreign minister said Beijing was committed to peaceful development, and greater cooperation was needed to address issues like trade and North Korea. Xi's ambitions are not limited to home: he has clearly articulated his vision of putting China at the centre of world affairs, a position reflecting its Chinese name: "the Middle Kingdom".

In Beijing, Wang also said efforts to bring North Korea back to the negotiating table were at a "crucial moment" and urged both parties to work together.

"China is upholding its rights and legitimate interests and taking care to preserve the relationship with India", he said.

"With political trust, not even the Himalayas can stop us from friendly exchanges".

As US president Donald Trump threatens a trade war with China, Wang warned that Beijing is ready to take an "appropriate and necessary response".

"I hope they mean what they say", he said.

China's Foreign Minister has mocked the Australian and USA preference of describing the region as the "Indo-Pacific" instead of "Asia-Pacific" as an "attention-grabbing idea" that will "dissipate like ocean foam".

The foreign minister, however, reacted strongly to a question whether the Indo-Pacific strategy being furthered by India, the US, Japan and Australia would affect China's Obor project.

Contrary to claims made by some academics and media outlets that the strategy was aimed at containing China, the four countries have made it clear that it targets no one, Wang said.
