The cybercrime cell of the Central Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested the founder of a news portal for posting a fake news post that went viral on social media.

Postcard founder-editor, Hegde, was arrested on the basis of two complaints - one of which was filed by the general secretary of the Bengaluru District Congress Committee, the police said. The Jain muni was hit by a bike while he was walking on the road. "He was not hit by Muslim youths as claimed by Hegde".

"Upon learning that the Jain Muni was hurt, Postcard News published a story alleging that the Jain Muni was attacked by Muslim youth".

Mr. Hegde's twitter handle is also followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Reacting to the arrest, BJP MP Pratap Simha said to NDTV, "The arrest was a deplorable move by the Siddaramaiah government".

Hegde and his website have often been accused of writing fake news stories to propagate the right-wing Hindu nationalist agenda.
