A not-for-profit group has sued Starbucks
But there's no evidence that we should worry about the amount of acrylamide in coffee.
When coffee beans are picked and removed from the fruit they're inside, they're a pale color. The organization claimed in the lawsuit that those companies violated state laws that require them to post warnings about acrylamide exposure from coffee.
A judge in California sided with a local non-profit group this week and ordered coffee retail giant Starbucks and other purveyors to warn customers of the drink's "cancer risk", saying chemicals used in the roasting process can be harmful to people's health.
"We would have no teacup storm were it not for the distorting effect of a Californian law created to reduce the burden of cancer [that is] being misused in what amounts to a technicality", he told TND. Another phase of the case is still pending to determine if companies should be forced to pay financial damages.
Coffee has been much studied over the years, and research has shown that it provides several health benefits, including lowering your risk of early death. To date, no studies have shown that and the chemical's impacts on human health are not fully understood.
In the case of acrylamide, we know that being exposed to too much of it is unsafe.
But while there's evidence, mostly in animals, that acrylamide can be carcinogenic in high enough doses, that isn't the case for coffee itself.
The chemical, acrylamide, is a by-product of the roasting process and is a known carcinogen. It's also one of the many chemicals in cigarette smoke, though in higher amounts than produced in coffee-making. Plus, it can't be avoided.
In 2008, the California attorney general settled lawsuits against Heinz, Frito-Lay, Kettle Foods and Lance Inc. when the companies agreed to reduce the levels of acrylamide found in potato chips and French fries.
When potatoes, bread, biscuits, or coffee are heated, acrylamide forms.

In the real world, the American Cancer Society reports that no higher risks have been found to be associated with foods containing the chemical.
Attorney Raphael Metzger, who brought the lawsuit on behalf of the Council for Education and Research on Toxics, said the warning label is important.
According to The Associated Press, the law that lets groups sue companies over claims that they expose people to chemicals has helped eliminate some unsafe chemicals but has also been "criticized for leading to quick settlement shakedowns".
Currently, there is no scientific research that directly says drinking coffee gives humans cancer at all. I thought coffee was supposed to be good for you now.
That means out-of-state coffee drinkers could also take their coffee with a cancer warning.
The new law relieved the raising concerns about recent year's possible dangers of coffee. And a review of more than 200 studies found that people who drank three or four cups of coffee a day were 19% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease.
Studies indicate coffee is unlikely to cause breast, prostate or pancreatic cancer, and it seems to lower the risks for liver and uterine cancers, the agency said.
The NCA's statement has been validated by numerous studies linking coffee to health benefits.
While it's not a good idea to inhale acrylamide from an industrial site, there is no reason to think the amount in coffee is unsafe.
