Google's team have pulled the malware-ridden apps, and learns of these incidents as it refines its anti-malware scanning tools. The researcher also discovered HiddnAd, an adware family hidden in seven apps (six QR code readers and a smart compass app), also available on the Play Store.
Crooks could have downloaded anything they wanted, but they instead chose to retrieve plugins that performed an "aggressive ad-clicking function" that generated a profit for its creators. The malware code was buried in what appeared like a regular Android programming library, and didn't go for until 6 hours after it was installed.
"After all, if your report helps to convince Google to remove the offending app, you just played a positive part in preventing anyone else from downloading it in future".

Originally spotted by Reddit users and then first reported by Android Police, it looks like Google is testing a new feature that recommends the lite version of a specific app when browsing its Play Store listing.
We've asked Google for comment on the move.
Nonetheless, with a user base that large, even a small percentage of malicious apps slipping through the net can result in millions of users inadvertently becoming victims. Vendors officially need to get certification to load Google apps (Android's licensing model is built around this), but some of them ignore this requirement and either load the apps regardless or encourage you to download them yourself. The message also shows the file size of the lite app, and tapping on "View" takes you to the app listing.
