Councils have called for more cash to sort out the roads as the Government announced an extra £100million will be spent on filling in potholes

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling announced the additional funding to help tackle potholes and help protect the roads against future severe weather conditions.

Last week, it was revealed the region has three thousand miles of roads in need of fix.

The Government is to give a further £100m funding to councils to fix potholes and other severe weather damage, the Transport Secretary has announced.

He said: 'People rely on good roads to get to work and to see friends or family.

Transport Secretary and MP for Epsom and Ewell, Chris Grayling, said an "unusually prolonged spell of freezing weather" has caused damage to roads.

On top of the £100,000 the council will get to be the lead authority on the digital inspector scheme, it will also receive £146,983 to help fix more potholes following a damaging winter.

"We are very please that we're getting £3.3m, but I think we could probably have spent the whole £100m if we had the chance".

A £1.3m funding boost will help patch up roads in Rotherham which were badly damaged by recent winter weather.

These trials will ultimately help provide councils with data to enable them to fix potholes before they occur as well as maintain their other assets more effectively as part of their asset management plans.

Mr Grayling said the money comes on top of the £75m given to councils from the Pothole Action Fund this year.
