Dozens of USA couples donned crowns and cradled guns at a controversial ceremony in a Pennsylvania church on Wednesday, forcing a nearby school to close and angering protesters.

Hundreds of couples toting AR-15 rifles packed a Unification church in Pennsylvania on Wednesday to have their marriages blessed and their weapons celebrated as "rods of iron" that could have saved lives in a recent Florida school shooting. They were carrying unloaded AR-15 rifles, the same assault weapon used last month by, in the president's words, "the insane man" to kill 17 students in Parkland, Florida.

NEWFOUNDLAND, Pa. - Crown-wearing worshippers gripping AR-15 rifles drank holy wine and exchanged or renewed wedding vows in a commitment ceremony at a Pennsylvania church on Wednesday, prompting a nearby school to cancel classes.

A company statement put out Wednesday morning said assault-style rifles would be removed from all 35 Field & Stream locations. The retail giant also does not sell handguns, except in Alaska, nor does it sell bump stocks or high-capacity magazines.

Guns were zip-tied at the door and no ammunition was permitted inside.

The World Peace and Unification Sanctuary, also known as the Sanctuary Church, had the event Wednesday (Feb. 28).

Worshippers at the church think the AR-15 - which could soon be banned from sale - represents the "rod of iron" mentioned in the book of Revelation.

At the ceremony, the Rev Sean Moon prayed for "a kingdom of peace police and peace militia where the citizens, through the right given to them by almighty God to keep and bear arms, will be able to protect one another and protect human flourishing". In the same sense, Moon said, God calls on his people to use the "rod of iron" to protect themselves.

Sreymom Ouk, 41, who attended the ceremony with her husband, Sort Ouk, and an AR-15, told the AP that she needed the weapon to defend her family against "sickos and evil psychopaths".

Lisa Desiena, from Scranton, protested outside the church with a sign that called the group an "armed religious cult". He prefaced that by saying: "You and I are responsible to protect our families, communities and, ultimately, our nation". While it is natural to want to censor these types of actions and the people behind them, we must remember that the most valued aspects of our society also protect the religious practices of the Newfoundland Sanctuary Church in the same way that they do the Westboro Baptist Church and the K.K.K.
