David Warner left and Steve Smith have been banned from representing Australia for a year
The ball-tampering scandal in the fourth test match against South Africa resulted in slamming one year ban on skipper Steve Smith, David Warner and resignation of Darren Lehmann as team's coach.
Lehmann said it had been a "wonderful experience" to coach the Australian cricket team, which he hoped could rebuild and move on, before asking the Australian public to "find it in their hearts to forgive these young men and get behind the 11 who are going to take the field (today)". "It was a failure of my leadership", the 28-year-old Smith, who has been banned for a year by Cricket Australia, said while trying hard to keep his composure in a packed press conference.
CA suspended Bancroft from all worldwide and Australian domestic cricket until the new year, while captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were each handed 12-month bans.

Lehmann, who had previously said he would not resign, made his decision in part due to the abuse his family received after three Australia players conspired to scuff up the ball with sandpaper during the third test against South Africa. Vice-captain David Warner was also banned for a year while opening batsman Bancroft was suspended for nine months. "I panicked and I'm very sorry", a contrite Bancroft admitted on Thursday.
"This is the right thing for Australian cricket".
On Wednesday, all of Smith, Warner and Bancroft were charged with breaching Article 2.3.5 of the CA Code of Conduct, namely that their conduct was contrary to the spirit of the game and brought cricket into disrepute.
He said he had not tampered with a cricket ball previously. "I've been thinking about my position for a while,"he said".
"I think forgiveness is such an important thing because if you just hang on to anger and fury, it's such a negative emotion and it just drains you of energy".

Somerset also confirmed Bancroft would not join them in the new season, as had been planned, because of his role in the saga. Smith and vice-skipper Warner have been banned for a year by Cricket Australia, while Bancroft was given a nine-month ban.
Former Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne, while condemning the cheating, said the hype whipped up by anti-Australian feeling around the cricketing world had led to overly harsh punishments.
Lehmann, speaking for the first time since Saturday's controversy in Cape Town, expressed sympathy for the trio.
Warner had issued a statement on social media to admit his mistakes had damaged cricket.
"At this present time, you will hear from me in a couple of days".
The ACA noted that the grading and sanctions for the players were well above what the ICC had implemented, that the bans were not reasonable on a world scale and that CA's board shouldn't have been the "deliberative body on the proposed sanctions".
"The national game we all love must always demonstrate standards and behaviours consistent with both the rules and the spirit of cricket, and the game must be supported by rigorous and fair processes".
The cricketer choked up as he tried to explain what message he would send to children that follow the sport and then broke down again as he tried to put into words the impact his actions had had on his parents. Indeed, this idea of nationality having a role in justice has been quite prevalent in the fall-out to the ball-tampering scandal.
"I have accepted the role to stand in as captain for this season. It is something I will regret for the rest of my life", the opener stated.
