Gustavo Petro, a former Bogota mayor who is seeking to become conservative Colombia's first leftist president, will oppose him after winning almost two million votes, 85 per cent of the poll, in his primary. Sunday's vote was the first in which the former Farc guerrillas, now a political party, took part.
Opinion polls predict a triumph for ex-president and senator Alvaro Uribe and his Centro Democratico party, along with other parties opposed to the peace agreement that has polarized the South American country.
The peace accord with the now-renamed Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guarantees their new political party 10 of the 280 seats in the new Congress, five in the Senate and five in the Chamber of Deputies.
The group will, however, have candidates in Sunday's congressional election, its first outing as an unarmed political party, after it demobilized under a 2016 peace deal with the government.
The results are likely to lead to a last-minute scramble among presidential candidates to form coalitions to better position themselves ahead of what is seen as a wide-open presidential race.
But much of the peace agreement has already been implemented, including the rebels disarming and demobilising.
Other candidates include Liberal party elder statesman Humberto de la Calle, who lead government negotiators at FARC talks, and former defence minister and USA ambassador Juan Carlos Pinzon.

In the opinion of ex-mayor Petro "the true presidential campaign starts this Monday and promises to be very close", although he expressed to be confident in winning the presidency of the country.
Duque has said he would not "thrash" the peace accord with the FARC, but he would attempt to modify certain aspects, like a provision that allows the former rebels with drug-trafficking convictions to participate in politics.
Sergio Guzman, a political analyst at Control Risks, said that while Duque's vote tally was impressive, it is still too early to tell whether he will win the May 27 presidential election.
Duque and Vargas Lleras, from the Radical Change party, have strong party machines behind them and can count on backing in Congress should either of them win the presidency.
