Daler Mehndi sentenced to 2 years in prison for human trafficking

Singer Daler Mehndi and his brother Samsher have been convicted for the crime of human trafficking by the Patiala court in a 2003 case.

The complainant Bakshish had then alleged that the Mehndi brothers have duped him of Lakhs of money on the pretext of sending him overseas as a Daler Mehndi troupe member. He has been sentenced to two years of imprisonment. The judgement has been pronounced by Patiala House Court. After Singh, 35 more complaints regarding similar charges of fraud against the two brothers poured in. Daler Mehndi allegedly took the money for sending people to the countries he toured, as part of his troupe, whenever he visited them.

Daler and his brother, Shamsher Singh, were accused of human trafficking in 2003.

A case was registered by the Patiala Police after Bakshish Singh of Balbehra village in Punjab in 2003 alleged that the Mehendi brother duped them of lakhs of rupees on the pretext of sending him overseas.

It was alleged that Mehndi and his brothers had taken two troupes to the United States of America in 1998 and 1999 during which they illegally "dropped off" 10 people.

The complaints stated that two brothers had taken "passage money" from them to help people migrate to the U.S. "illegally", but had failed to do so.

Patiala Police had even raided the offices of Daler at Connaught Place in New Delhi and seized documents, including the case file of those who had paid the alleged "passage money" to the brothers.
