Darren Lehmann steps down as coach after ball-tampering scandal

Smith said after the Test that the Australians' "leadership group" had been aware of the plan to alter the condition of the ball.

Australia cricket coach Darren Lehmann says he will quit after the final Test against South Africa, citing the emotional stress of the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Lehmann was cleared of any wrongdoing by a Cricket Australia investigation after Steve Smith and David Warner were banned for one year while Cameron Bancroft was handed a nine-month ban.

"They know they must face the consequences, they have made a grave mistake, but they are not bad people".

The weather forecast suggests sunny skies throughout, with the first ball on Friday due to be bowled at 10:00.

"As a coach, you feel for them as people", added Lehmann. These are young men and I hope people will give them a second chance.

"It's on my watch and I take responsibility for what happened last Saturday".

"We've had a lot of highs along the way and played some really exciting cricket".

"It's been verified by others that on the walkie-talkie. he radioed down and said 'what the f*** is going on!?'", Sutherland told reporters.

ICC chief executive David Richardson said: "We've seen a number of incidents of poor player behaviour in recent weeks which has included ugly sledging, send-offs, dissent against umpires' decisions, a walk-off and ball tampering".

Lehmann issued an apology to the Australian public, but asked that they also understand the error the players made and that they be forgiven.

Even prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has condemned the team, describing fielder Cameron Bancroft's attempts to tamper with the ball by using sandpaper as a "shocking affront to Australia".

Lehmann says he came to his decision after watching news coverage of Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft returning home having confessed to cheating in the third Test last weekend.

"We're only playing a game, that's all we're playing", he sobbed. "I've been thinking about my position for a while, despite telling media yesterday that I'm not resigning", he told reporters in Johannesburg on Thursday. "Obviously previously we've butted heads on the line but that's not the way to go about us playing cricket moving forward", Lehmann said in Johannesburg. Then I spoke to the players at tea time and said we would deal with it at the end of play, which happened through the process.

Lehmann, a colossus in Australian domestic cricket, took over the role of head coach of the Australian team from Mickey Arthur in June 2013 just weeks before the start of the Ashes.

"The feeling from the review is that this is an isolated incident but there are things that I don't want to go into too much detail right now", he said.

"If we take a leaf out of someone like New Zealand. we push the boundaries on the ground, so we need to make sure we are respecting the game and its traditions".

"One of the things which Mike has tried to instil is to play like the kids who fell in love with the game", McCullum told the BBC in 2015.

While the plaudits rained down, there was also discomfort among some Australian fans at their team's conduct, particularly Lehmann's baiting of England paceman Stuart Broad.

"I really felt for Steve, and as I saw him crying in front of the media, and all the players are really hurting".
