More headaches for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as Democrats in the US Senate launch a last ditch attempt to reinstate net neutrality rules in the United States.

Senate Democrats will need at least one more Republican vote. Sen. Even the Obama-era rules allowed internet providers to essentially prioritize certain data by creating so-called managed services.

Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz condemned the Federal Communication Commission's repeal of the net neutrality rules last week.

In a blog post published Tuesday, AT&T Senior Vice President Bob Quinn laid out the company's concept for internet services that will charge an additional fee for improved services while maintaining a promise not to infringe upon the average consumer's internet experience. "While there is no substitute for federal regulation, we will work at the state level to try mitigate the consequences of this week's decision".

A bill has now been introduced in the Senate that would undo the FCC's repeal of net neutrality, but it faces nearly impossible odds in the House and with President Trump. Supporters say rules are necessary to ensure the internet remains free and open.

It's only expedited, however, in that it requires fewer signatures in the Senate to force a full vote, and that it doesn't have to be scheduled on the legislative calendar.

Ramaphosa reinstates sacked finance Minister in Cabinet reshuffle
Ramaphosa has pledged "a new dawn" for the country and to tackle the corruption that Zuma is accused of fostering. The nine-year rule of Zuma was riddled with allegations of rampant corruption and economic mismanagement.

The fight over net neutrality is not new: initiatives similar to the "Restoring Internet Freedom" order have been put forth by the FCC in the past decade, though they've always been shut down.

The introduction of the resolution coincides with a "net neutrality day of action" organized by grassroots groups like Fight for the Future.

The FCC voted 3-2 to dismantle net neutrality rules in December.

The Washington state legislature approved a bill on Tuesday, which Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign, that would enact sweeping net neutrality regulations for all internet service providers (ISPs) operating in the state. Thanks to the hard work of millions of Internet users, these protections were enshrined in the FCC's 2015 Open Internet Order. Currently, the Senate is just one vote shy of forcing a vote to block the FCC's repeal of net neutrality. A recent poll showed that 83 percent of Americans do not approve of the FCC's action to repeal net neutrality rules.

"I know it can be as simple as someone placing an order online at Starbucks and going to pick it up in an expeditious way that all of a sudden is slowed down", Cantwell said during the press conference. A proposed bill in California (SB-460), for example, would prohibit providers from blocking lawful content (with exceptions for reasonable network management), impairing or degrading lawful traffic, engaging in paid prioritization, or using marketing tactics that are misleading with respect to treatment of internet traffic.
