Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), along with Rep. Eliot L. Engel (D-N.Y.), cited documents from a whistleblower in a letter to White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly and Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan.
Cummings and Engel requested varying documentation to determine the extent of the alleged personnel actions and whether or not they were prohibited by law. In an undated email, David Wurmser, who advised former Vice President Dick Cheney and former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton, wrote, "Newt: I think a cleaning is in order here". It also noted her role in the promotion of President Barack Obama's Iran deal, which Trump has disparaged as a "disaster". "I hear Tillerson has been reasonably good on stuff like this and cleaning house, but there are so many that it boggles the mind..."
The list of officials they want to speak with includes the department's chief and deputy chief of staff, director and deputy director of policy planning, and White House adviser and liaison.
One White House aide, Julie Haller, said falsely in an email that Nowrouzzadeh was "born in Iran" (she is of Iranian descent but was born in CT, according to Politico).
"If these documents are authentic", wrote Cummings and Engel, "[they] show that these political appointees characterized career State Department employees in derogatory terms, including as "a leaker and troublemaker"; "Turncoat"; "associated with previous policy"; and 'Obama/Clinton loyalists not supportive of President Trump's foreign policy agenda'".

"Ed - My assignment was not 'completed, '" she wrote, according to Politico.
The emails also identify several White House officials, including Deputy White House Counsel Makan Delrahim, who were aware of the story and communicating about Nowrouzzadeh.
The email was titled "Derek notes" - an apparent reference to then-National Security Council aide Derek Harvey, according to the report.
On Thursday, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert denied that any career officials had been targeted for their views.
