Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a function at Jammu University here, Dr Jitendra Singh, without naming Farooq Abdullah, brushed aside the "unsubstantiated" statement that Jinnah was against the partition of India and said there is a need to re-read the history. Singh said that Jinnah wasn't pleased with Mahatma Gandhi's offer of becoming the Prime Minister of the country if he gave up the demand for the creation of a separate country.

He said, "Jinnah was not going to divide the country".

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah sparked a controversy on Sunday when he laid blame on Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel for the partition of India and expectedly, it did not go down well with many. "It was decided that we will not divide India, but instead, have a special representation for Muslims and other minorities like Sikhs".

When asked about the role of Sheikh Abdullah and National Conference in the years following Independence, Dr Jitendra said, there were a number of opportunistic adjustments made, the climax of which was noticed during the finalisation of Indira-Sheikh accord of 1975.

He said, "the way we are diving on religion lines, it is a matter of challenge."On Congress's defeat in North East Assembly Polls under Rahul Gandhi's presidentship, Dr Abdullah said, "I don't think he (Rahul Gandhi) has failed". He claimed this led Jinnah to form Pakistan, and that if Nehru, Patel and the others had listened, "there would have been no Bangladesh, no Pakistan".

Abdullah added that Jinnah did not want Pakistan in the first place.

"Jawaharlal Nehru was also in hurry to take over as the Prime Minister". Or else there would have been no separation. He said if it weren't for their refusal there would have been only one India.
