US pushes NAFTA talks pace warns of political headwinds
This morning in metals news, Goldman Sachs' chief economist said the if the USA imposes steel and aluminum tariffs, the decision could preceded an exit from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA); the president's trade adviser said exceptions in the proposed new tariffs are unlikely and LME copper holds above its two-week low.
"I believe there should be a quick and timely inclusion process for existing contracts as well as for existing businesses", he said, and added he hoped the three countries would stay focused on concluding the NAFTA talks.
Officials concluded a chapter on regulatory practices earlier this week, and may be able to finish a handful more before ministers from the United States, Mexico and Canada meet for talks in Mexico City on Monday. He says it incentivizes domestic businesses to outsource for cheaper labor, leaving them reluctant to negotiate on the issue.
On Monday, Trump tweeted "Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum will only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed".

The Mexico City round of NAFTA talks was thrown into disarray after Trump announced a plan last week to impose a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminium imports, arguing they were needed to protect USA industries and jobs.

NAFTA negotiators have successfully concluded discussions on rules governing food safety and animal health, a Mexican source familiar with the matter said on Monday.
