More Democrats voted early in Texas Primary
Texas's primary brings the first actual voting in the 2018 midterm cycle, giving both parties a chance for a more concrete measure ahead of November's elections.
The increase comes despite lower Republican primary turnout in the county.
Republicans had a combined total of 27,985 votes in early voting and by mail. Democrats more than made up for the Dallas GOP's fade by more than doubling their own turnout, from 34,815 early voters in 2014 to 69,844 early voters in 2018.
Grayson County is seeing similar trends.
Data out of the Nueces County Elections office shows 6,755 Democrats cast early ballots, compared to 5,487 Republicans. In Travis County, almost three times as many Democrats voted as Republicans.

Texas GOP strategist Derek Ryan pointed out that Democrats do have some major statewide primaries, such as the gubernatorial race, that could be driving some turnout, but admitted that Democrats have done a good job of recruiting candidates across the board, thus making those competitive races more appealing to some voters.
Early voting wrapped up in Texas Friday, and on Tuesday, thousands more locals are expected to cast their vote in the Texas primary election.
In fundraising email last week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott warned supporters, "We've seen a surge of liberal enthusiasm in deep red states like Georgia, Alabama and Oklahoma". And it remains uncertain if the party's excitement is such that the lion's share of the vote came during the early voting period, which could drive down Tuesday's participation.
Texas Democrats celebrated the totals Monday morning, as well as a number of national reports touting the potential for Texas turning blue in 2018. It was the Democratic Party that called these improvements "crumbs". "Something special is happening in Texas; a blue wave is rising". That includes four Senate districts where Democrats didn't field candidates in 2014 or 2012, and 20 new House districts where they didn't have candidates in either 2016, 2014 or 2012.
