Egypt: Legal Measures against Media that Disturb Public Security

In a statement, Sadek urged all the prosecutors to take the necessary legal action against outlets that deliberately publish rumors to "disrupt Egypt's public security".

Egypt's government press center said on Tuesday that it will suspend cooperation with the British Broadcast Center (BBC) over a recent report on the country's human right records that Egyptian officials say contained "lies and allegations", state news agency MENA reported.

"In the light of the recently noticed attempts of evil forces to undermine the nation's security and safety by publishing and spreading lies and false news through different media outlets and social media websites, it is made a decision to follow up these websites attentively to pursue whatever they publish that harms the nation's interests", the prosecution said in a statement. But many Egyptians see this episode as yet another instance of Western media hyping claims by the Muslim Brotherhood or Western NGOs of "disappearances" of activists.

An Egyptian woman believed to have been forcibly disappeared by Egyptian authorities has appeared on state television following a damning report on disappearances in the country by the BBC. Her mother talked to the BBC on the alleged enforced disappearance of her daughter, accusing Egypt's security forces of kidnapping her daughter.

Soon, ONTV aired Zubeida herself being interviewed alongside her husband and newborn son, and directly refuting the allegations.

The prosecutor said media outlets should be monitored and Egyptian authorities involved with regulating media should also report any "violations of media and press ethics" to the public prosecutor.

The BBC nevertheless stands by what it described as "the integrity of our reporting teams".

Egyptian authorities deny any cases of forced disappearances or tortures in prisons amid efforts by worldwide and local rights groups to fight against claims of human rights violations.
