Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has been elected for a second term after winning nearly 92% of votes, according to preliminary election results reported on local media.

According to Al-Ahram, some 25 million Egyptians out of almost 60 million eligible voters have cast their votes in the three-day election concluded on Wednesday.

According to initial results published by local media, spoilt votes accounted for 6 percent while Musa clinched only 3 percent of the vote.

Vote counting started after polling stations closed on Wednesday.According to non-official figures, 21,088,295 people voted for Sisi in polling stations across Egypt.

Official results are not expected to be released until next week.

With the election seen by many, including Sisi, as a referendum on his presidency, the focus is on turnout which he has sought to support tough economic reforms and a fight against Islamist militants. Twenty-three million voted for Sisi.

A couple of possible strong competitors in the presidential race have either withdrawn or been disqualified over violations.

In the Nile Delta governorate of Gharbiya, El-Sisi obtained 90 percent of the vote, with a turnout of more than 50 percent, Egypt's state news agency MENA said.

In an interview days ahead of the vote, Sisi said he had wished there were more candidates, denying any role in sidelining them.
