A prestigious elephant polo tournament in Thailand has been accused of animal cruelty after a video was released of the animals reportedly being beaten behind the scenes.

Dozens of elephants were trucked down to the Thai capital for the four-day King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, an annual charity event that brings players from around the world to a field on the banks of the Chaophraya River.

The footage, shot from nearby hotel and apartment windows, shows handlers in a holding area next to the polo grounds repeatedly beating and jabbing the captive elephants' heads with bullhooks (weapons that resemble a fireplace poker with a long, sharp metal hook on one end) and pulling the animals with the hooks by their extremely sensitive ears.

Newkirk also added, "PETA is calling on IBM to stop putting its name on this abusive spectacle and never support events that exploit animals in the future".

PETA Asia is encouraging people to urge the Minor Hotel Group, which organises the King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament, to stop supporting these cruel "games".

The tournament's organiser, a Thai-owned global hotel chain, say that since the games began in 2001 - originally in the seaside resort city of Hua Hin but now in the capital, Bangkok - they have raised nearly $950,000 for projects benefiting Thailand's elephants, "including housing for the mahouts and families, shelters for the elephants and a mobile blood centrifuge and elephant ambulance for the Thai Elephant Conservation Center".

'With legislation in place to ban elephants from "working" in cities, the camp offers mahouts a viable alternative to return with these proud animals to the green jungles where they belong'.

'The organisers and main sponsors of the event confirm that they are upset by this video and strongly condemn the mistreatment of any elephant at any time.

The tournament has faced criticism in the past from animal rights activists, who say mahouts must inflict pain on the elephants to manoeuver them around the pitch and provoke crowd-pleasing roars.
