Subdued celebrations as Lyon joins Morkel in 300 club
The tall fast bowler, who has announced he will retire from all forms of global cricket after this series, had earlier removed Usman Khawaja (5) and claimed the key wicket of Australia captain Steve Smith (5). When Keshav Maharaj drove Starc to cover, South Africa had lost six wickets for 37 runs - and lost control of the match on the best batting pitch of any of the Tests South Africa have hosted against India and Australia this season.
Steve Smith helped Rabada and Morkel to end the innings with five slip catches.
Smith became 299 after lunch, when he needlessly followed a short wide ball with no real intent, tipping a practice catch to Elgar at gully.
One of these brought him undone as he searched for his first Test 50, giving Morkel a fourth wicket for the innings, but Lyon had still notched a new highest score.
It was the start of a superb spell in which Cummins took four wickets for 12 runs in eight overs to finish the day with four for 64.
After stopping momentarily, Warner appeared to exchange words with the elderly spectator, who had risen from his seat in the Western Province Cricket Club members section.
"It was a bit of a disappointment that we didn't get that wicket earlier", said Morkel.

South Africa vs Australia: Kagiso Rabada sends Warner's stumps for a walk
They shared a partnership of 50 before off-spinner Nathan Lyon had Rabada caught by Smith at slip off his first ball of he day. In Rabada's next over, Warner hit a massive six over long-leg, which he followed with a six through backward point.
Reaction to omnibus spending bill signed by Trump
The $1.3 trillion measure incorporates all twelve annual Appropriations bills for Fiscal Year 2018 (i.e., current year). Mitch McConnell to the White House, but afterward appeared to agree with their support for the bill.
David Warner and Rabada have been the big names of this series - as much for off-field activity as their cricket.
Elgar finished on 141 not out off 284 balls and spent seven hours and 14 minutes in keeping Australia's attack at bay in South Africa's first innings of 311 all out. He sliced a no-ball for four, then was bowled by a ball which went between bat and pad with Warner stuck on his crease.
Opener Dean Elgar was 121not out - having been dropped on 53 and 87 - but South Africa's momentum had been completely removed by Cummins after the home team made a strong start to the crucial third test.
But if Rabada's frustration level was rising, having just been dispatched for 22 runs in five balls, he had the last laugh when his next delivery not only jagged from leg to off to beat Warner's defence, but hit the top of off stump and sent it cartwheeling away out of the ground. So far they have not looked like it. "Not on this level, we can not accept it anywhere in the world, talking about players and their families". Meanwhile, Elgar remained unbeaten after playing a stupendous knock and also carried his bat through.
Late contributions from Lyon (47) and Tim Paine (33 not out) with their 66 run stand for the ninth wicket helped Australia make a brief recovery but Morkel once again returned to dismiss the former ass the visitors ended the day with a score of 245 for nine, still trailing South Africa's first innings total by 66 runs.
Although 10 other fielders share the record, Smith was only the second Australia player to achieve the feat after Vic Richardson in 1935-1936.
