Emma Thompson used the breakdown of her marriage to Kenneth Branagh as inspiration for her heartbreaking Love Actually scene.
It is 18 years since Emma Thompson and Sir Kenneth Branagh, the golden couple of British cinema in the early 1990s, announced that they were separating amid rumours that he was having an affair with Helena Bonham Carter.
"That scene where my character is standing by the bed crying is so well known because it's something everyone's been through", she said at a fundraiser for the Tricycle Theatre in North West London via Metro. In one scene (shown above), Karen dissolves into tears after realizing a necklace she'd found in his coat pocket prior to Christmas was actually meant for another woman. Well, it wasn't exactly that, but we've all been through it. "It's pointless", she added.
The actress, who is worth £30million, also told the audience: 'I feel like I look my age and I don't mind that. "He picked up the pieces and put them together again".
It later emerged that he had fallen in love with Helena while filming 1994 horror Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and they enjoyed a relationship until 1999.

Emma is now happily married to fellow actor, and producer Greg Wise. Branagh married art director Lindsay Brunnock in 2003 as well. He was knighted in 2012.
Thompson told The Sunday Times in 2013 that she bore no hard feelings to Bonham Carter.
"That is. all blood under the bridge", Thompson said of holding a grudge against "the other woman".
