Equifax said it will notify the affected consumers directly, and will offer identity theft protection and credit file monitoring services at no cost to them. Equifax identified previous victims of the attack through Social Security numbers and names.
A month later, Equifax said 2.5 million more customers were affected in what is one of the largest data breaches in the U.S.
In a news release issued Thursday morning, Equifax said the additional compromised consumers were uncovered during a forensic examination of the company's databases. Hackers were chiefly trying to swipe Social Security numbers, the company said.
Equifax said that it will notify these 2.4 million consumers about the new discovery.
"We are committed to regaining the trust of consumers, improving transparency and enhancing security across our network", Barros said.
