Khaleda finally gets interim bail for four months

On February 8, the Dhaka Special Court-5 convicted the former Prime Minister and BNP chairpersonand sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The HC also asked the authorities concerned of the HC for preparing the paperbook (documents related to the case) of the case within four months for hearing the appeal she filed against her conviction in the case.

But hours after the high court order, she was "shown arrested" in another criminal case under a separate arrest warrant, officials said.

Bangladesh opposition leader Khaleda Zia says the charges she faces are aimed at excluding her and her family from politics.

"In such cases, bail is usually granted instantly as soon as an appeal is lodged".

Lawyers said a two-member panel of judges considered the 72-year-old Zia's age and health condition in granting the bail.

The BNP has claimed that the cases are politically-motivated to keep its party chief out of the national elections.

She is the chairperson and leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) which was founded by Rahman in the late 1970s. When she took office in 1991, she became the first woman in the country's history and second in the Muslim world to head a democratic government as prime minister.
