Britain warns Russia over former double agent's mysterious illness

It has been reported on Monday, March 5, 2018 by the British media that Skripal is in critical condition after exposure to "unknown substance" in English city of Salisbury.

Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, who was convicted by Russia of betraying agents to British intelligence, was critically ill on Monday after exposure to an unidentified substance in Britain, two sources close to the investigation told Reuters.

"But it looked like they'd been taking something quite strong".

"On the bench there was a couple, an older guy and a younger girl", she said. She was sort of leant-in on him, it looked like she'd passed out maybe. "He was doing some odd hand movements, looking up to the sky", witness Freya Church told the BBC.

"A major incident has been declared today and a multi-agency response has been coordinated", he said.

Holden said Wiltshire police "received a call from a member of the public who was concerned for the welfare of two people" at around 4:15pm (1615 GMT) on Sunday.

Sources close to the investigation told BBC and Reuters that one of those affected was Sergey Skripal, part of a "spy swap" between the USA and Russian Federation in 2010. Russian Federation released four prisoners in exchange for 10 USA spies.

Skripal was among 14 spies swapped by Moscow and Washington at Austria's Vienna airport in 2010, in scenes reminiscent of the Cold War.

"The focus at this moment in time is trying to establish what has caused these people to become critically ill, and we are working with partners to prioritize this diagnosis and ensure that they receive the most appropriate and timely treatment", he said.

Neighbours at Skripal's home in Salisbury say police arrived around 5pm GMT on Sunday and have been there ever since.

There will be comparisons drawn with the poisoning case of Alexander Litvinenko a FSB spy who fell ill and later died after drinking a cup of tea laced with radioactive polonium.

The circumstances surrounding Sunday's incident were still murky and police urged the public not to speculate.

A British inquiry into the death said Russia's President Vladimir Putin "probably approved" the killing and identified two Russians, Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitri Kovtun, as the prime suspects.

"PHE understands that those exposed to the substances have been decontaminated, as is standard practice in situations like this".

Among the Russian agents deported from America as part of the spy swap deal was Manhattan socialite and diplomat's daughter Anna Chapman, who was married to a British man and lived in London for several years. He was convicted of "high treason in the form of espionage". Skripal was found guilty of passing the identities of Russian secret agents operating throughout Europe, to MI6.
