"For example, Facebook could make its data sharing and advertising policies much clearer to users, be more transparent about what data is shared with apps and third parties, and make privacy settings easier for users to understand and modify", said Natalie Bazarova.

Earlier this month, whistleblower Christopher Wylie revealed political consulting company Cambridge Analytica had obtained profiles on 50 million Facebook users via an academic researcher's personality prediction app.

In terms of the updated settings menu, Facebook has promised that "instead of having settings spread across almost 20 different screens, they're now accessible from a single place".

Facebook has adjusted its privacy settings and ad targeting tools to give users more control over their information, following the allegations that Cambridge Analytica used Facebook to harvest data for 50 million people in the to sway the 2016 United States election.

A Facebook executive says the company would be breaching the laws of Ireland by handing data about its New Zealand users to the Privacy Commission. It also required Facebook to establish a "comprehensive privacy program", block access to a user's account within 30 days of it being deleted and barred it from making any deceptive claims about its privacy practices.

The proposed changes include even control of advertisements that a Facebook user would like to watch, review posts shared or reacted to searches made on the social media platform.

Bazarova said the best way to protect social media users was through public education and awareness-raising. They are still down more than 17 percent since March 16, when Facebook first acknowledged that user data had been improperly channeled in 2014 via a third-party app to Cambridge Analytica, which was later hired by Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

People familiar with the matter are saying that in their initial focus group testing, there were already concerns about having a Facebook-branded device, since they're already notorious for collecting too much data. Facebook is a honeypot of data and the unscrupulous will always try to bend its rules.
