A USA consumer protection agency said Monday it has opened an investigation into Facebook for potentially failing to live up to its promises on privacy and possible violations of a consent decree.

Amid fallout from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the Federal Trade Commission reiterated Monday its commitment to protecting data privacy for consumers interacting with the likes of Facebook, Inc.

In a statement, the FTC said it has opened a non-public investigation into "recent press reports raising substantial concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook".
