Illinois county sues Facebook Cambridge Analytica over misuse of data
Speaking after a meeting with senior European Facebook managers in Berlin, Ms Barley said the events surrounding Cambridge Analytica were "intolerable", adding that she was still waiting to hear how many German users had been affected by the data affair. Under the agreement, Facebook was required to obtain explicit permission from users in order to share their information with third-parties. "I know a lot of people are shutting down their accounts, but there are many others who are afraid to cut off the relationships they've built over the network", said Kim So-jung, a 29-year-old office worker in Seoul who has been using Facebook for the past 14 years. With public trust of the company at an all-time low, users have now started the #deletefacebook movement. "If you chose to turn this feature on, we will begin to continuously log this information", the posting said.
Facebook deputy chief privacy officer Rob Sherman said on CNBC television that the company remains "strongly committed to protecting people's information".
In a blog posted on March 25, Facebook retorted with a "fact check" of these claims, stating that call and text logging is only an opt-in feature that Android users have to specifically agree to when they install Messenger or Facebook Lite. The campaigns were based on psychological and personality profiles mined from the Facebook data. They say the data is used "to improve people's experience across Facebook" by helping to connect with others.
Facebook, the lawsuit says, failed to take action to correct and disclose the breach.
