Facebook said it won't separate the News Feed after all

The idea was to create a version of Facebook with two different News Feeds: one as a dedicated place with posts from friends and family and another as a dedicated place for posts from Pages.

Mosseri said that Facebook (fb) tested a separate news feed, dubbed the Explore Feed, based on feedback from users indicating they wanted to see more content from their family and friends in their news feeds.

You gave us our answer: People don't want two separate feeds.

Aside from the backlash by news organizations, Facebook found that separating the feeds didn't actually lead to increased connections with friends and family as it had intended. Facebook was testing two separate news feeds in countries like Bolivia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Serbia, Slovakia, and Sri Lanka.

Mosseri said the company had also "received feedback that we made it harder for people in the test countries to access important information, and that we didn't communicate the test clearly". However, the experiment didn't yield positive results which is why Facebook has now chose to ditch its plans to separate content on the world's largest social network into two separate feeds.

Today, we're ending one of those tests: the Explore Feed.

Facebook has been making big changes to the news feed - basically the soul of Facebook's platform - in the last few months. When news about the split news feed first surfaced, it sparked concerns about the growing power of the social media giant, and how publishers would be affected. It seems people just didn't want to explore.

Facebook noticeably chose smaller countries with emerging markets to carry out the test, a sentiment that was not lost on local publishers. In January, Facebook said that the core news feed would show people more family-friendly postings like a friend's baby pictures and less marketing content and news articles. "We're acting on this feedback by updating the way we evaluate where to test new products, and how we communicate about them".

We constantly try out new features, design changes and ranking updates to understand how we can make Facebook better for everyone.
