Colombia's FARC political party on Thursday dropped out of this year's presidential race, as their candidate, former guerrilla commander Rodrigo "Timochenko" Londono, recovers from heart surgery.

Colombians get set to go to the polls on Sunday for legislative elections in advance of a presidential vote in May.

It marks the electoral debut of former FARC rebels, who have now formed a political party.

After undergoing two heart surgeries in just one week and being diagnosed with emphysema, Londoño said Wednesday he had chose to pull out of the presidential race due to his health issues.

Four years ago, when Colombia last held congressional elections, Carlos Antonio Lozada was dodging army bullets in jungle trenches as he and his Marxist rebel comrades battled a government offensive.

"We are committed, with all our determination, to break all ties between violence and politics", the group said. Doctors diagnosed him with chronic lung disease and a clogged artery.

As part of the peace deal, the FARC will be guaranteed five seats each in the 108-member Senate and the 172-member lower house.

The FARC was expected to replace him with another candidate, but the party said in a statement to the press Thursday that its leadership made a decision to pull out of the entire process arguing that the current political situation didn't guarantee the necessary conditions for a fair presidential race.
